Sino-Indian ties
Sir, - I strongly disagree with Mr. Katyal's assertion of a
``fear of irreparable damage done to mutual ties which persisted
for months after Pokhran-II'' (``Not yet friends'', The Hindu,
Jan. 22). It somehow alludes to the fact that Pokhran-II was
responsible for strained ties between China and India.
Pokhran was a manifestation of the strained ties. It should be
remembered that China was (is) responsible for providing Pakistan
with the knowhow for nuclear weaponry and its delivery mechanism.
China's actions were directly responsible in souring relations,
and they were very sour before Pokhran-II. The rest of the
article is delusional with Mr. Katyal's wishful thinking and
attempts to justify Mr. Li Peng's statements and their supposedly
implied meaning.
R. Krithivas,
San Jose (U.S.)
