DMK-led front will sweep polls: Vaiko

By Our Staff Reporter

HOSUR, JAN.27. The NDA combine led by the DMK in the State would sweep the coming Assembly elections, said the MDMK general secretary, Mr. Vaiko, at Palakodu, near here on Friday.

Mr. Vaiko after collecting funds from his partymen in Dharmapuri district, told reporters that the NDA combine would face the elections unitedly.

Noting that the DMK president and Chief Minister, Mr. M. Karunanidhi, would make the necessary decisions in the seat- sharing exercise, he said the process was bound to be smooth as the combine's aim was putting the DMK back in power.

However, he refused to comment on the possibility of a third front emerging in the state. Mr. Vaiko also saw no threat to the NDA combine in the Centre and noted that the leadership provided by the Prime Minister, Mr. Vajpayee, had resulted in boosting the country's image.

Mr. Vaiko condemned the Sri Lankan Government for failing to heed the ceasefire call given by the LTTE. Charging Colombo with ``resorting to genocide of the Tamils,'' he said in spite of the international community pressure on the need for holding talks to resolve the issue, the Sri Lankan Government had failed to respond and instead gone shopping for weapons from Pakistan and Israel.

Reiterating MDMK's stand that a separate Tamil Eelam was the only solution, he contended that it was `utterly illogical to state that the creation of Tamil Eelam in Sri Lanka would result in claims for a separate Tamil Nadu.

He said MDMK was not inclined to the idea of a greater Tamil Nadu and at no stage would the party extend support to such separatist tendencies.
