Tibetans stage protest
By Our Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI, JAN. 13. About 100 Tibetan activists were detained by
the Delhi police today while protesting against ``atrocities'' on
Tibetans by the Chinese during the visit of the Chairman of the
National People's Congress of China, Mr. Li Peng, to the India
International Centre at Max Mueller Marg here.
The protestors, who had gathered under the banners of the
Himalayan Committee for Action on Tibet, the Tibetan Women's
Association (TWA) and the Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC), held
protests to assert the need for inclusion of Tibetans in the
talks between India and China on the issue of Tibet.
The Tibetan Youth Congress claimed that two of its members were
even able to block Mr. Li Peng's car, for some time. The TYC and
the TWA also claimed to have succeeded in holding protests
despite heavy security being thrown in for the Chinese leader.
About a hundred of the 200-odd protestors were rounded up by the
police and taken to the Tughlaq Road police station where cases
were registered against them.
