By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, JAN. 12. Noted industrialist, Mr. L.L. Narayan, chairman emeritus of the Chennai-based Rane group of Industries, died here today, following a massive cardiac arrest. He was 83.

Born in Vaikom, Kerala, in 1917, Mr. Lakshmana Iyer Lakshminarayan, had his education in Travancore and Chennai. Starting his career with a small automobile trading company in the 1940s, Mr. Narayan ventured into manufacturing and established Engine Valves factory near Chennai in 1959. In a few years, the group grew into a multi-crore auto-component manufacturing major. He was connected with business chambers, manufacturing associations and was a member of the State Planning Commission.

`LLN', as he was known, continued as Rane group's chariman till 1989, when his eldest son Mr. L. Lakshman took on the mantle. He, however, continued to take active interest in the group. He is survived by wife, two sons (Mr. Lakshman and Mr. L. Ganesh), and three daughters.
