State population policy next month: Minister

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JAN. 10. The State population policy will be announced next month, the Health Minister, Mr. V.C. Kabeer, has said.

Inaugurating the `Nursery for New Born' at the Women and Children Hospital, Thycaud here today, the Minister said the emergence of several eradicated diseases in the State had led to a rethinking of the achievements in the health sector. Efforts should be taken to further bring down the infant mortality rate in the State.

The Minister said nurseries for new born would be set up in 20 general-district women and children hospitals. He called for employees cooperation to streamline the Health Department. Stern action would be initiated against those who accepted money from the patients, he added.

The Government was thinking of introducing award for the best hospital. Steps would be taken to improve facilities at Peroorkada, Fort and Thyacud hospitals as part of reducing the heavy rush at the SAT Hospital. The Minister also announced that steps would be taken to improve the facilities at KHRWS pay wards.

Mr. B. Vijayakumar, MLA, presided over the function. Mr. V. S. Sivakumar, MP, the Director of Health Services, Dr. V.K. Rajan, the District Collector, Mr. S. Sreenivasan, the Superintendent, Dr. D. Thankom, and the District Medical Officer, Dr. Shailaja, were among those who attended.
