Govt. employees strike evokes mixed response
By Our Staff Reporter
MADURAI, JAN. 10. The one-day strike call given by the Tamil Nadu
Government Employees Association (TNGEA) to protest against the
Government's refusal to fill up vacancies in certain services,
today evoked mixed response in southern districts of Madurai,
Virudhunagar, Theni, Sivagangai and Dindigul.
While the Revenue section in all district collectorates, barring
Dindigul, relatively remained unaffected, the impact of the
strike was felt in all development sections of the districts.
According to a senior official in Virudhunagar, 10 per cent of
employees, mostly from development sections, refrained from the
work today. Sivagangai district recorded the lowest with a mere
five per cent of employees keeping away from the work, while, the
Dindigul district recorded the highest with nearly 65 per cent
joining the strike. The strike did not seriously affect the
functioning of Government offices in Theni district. According to
police sources, nearly 35 to 40 per cent of the employees struck
work in Madurai district. The Revenue department recorded the
lowest with just 91 out of a total 756 keeping away from the
work. Police sources claimed that nearly 800 employees, out of a
total 2000, joined the strike in the district.
Work in Tiruchi Collectorate, development departments, district
supply office, taluk office, panchayat unions etc., were
affected.
According to official sources, the strike did not affect the
regular work in Government offices in Tirunelveli district.
Out of 11,000 Government employees working in various departments
in Ramanathapuram district, only 24 employees abstained from the
work.
Coimbatore:
Work in seven taluk offices was ``severely affected'' and 80 per
cent of the Government employees did not turn up for work,
according to the Joint Action Committee of All Tamil Nadu
Government Employees Unions.
In a statement here, the committee said if their demands were not
conceded, the Government employees would proceed on indefinite
strike from February 13.
Salem:
The employees, led by Mr. A. V. Selvaraj and Mr. M. Murugesan,
president and secretary of the Salem district JAC respectively,
staged a demonstration in front of the Collectorate.
The strike hit the functioning of various departments such as
revenue, HR & CE, commercial tax, taluk offices and so on.
Government employees in Erode district also struck work.
