G. Lakshmanan passes away

CHENNAI, JAN. 10. Mr. G. Lakshmanan, former Lok Sabha Deputy
Speaker and DMK Member of Parliament, died at a private hospital
here today following a cardiac arrest. He was 78.
Mr. Lakshmanan, who had been treated for a brain clot since
August last year, was admitted to the hospital again recently,
family sources said.
Born in Aranthangi in Pudukottai district, Mr. Lakshmanan had his
college education in Kumbakonam. After joining the Postal
Department, he plunged into the trade union movement in 1960 and
was actively involved in the activities of the National
Federation of Postal Employees.
Mr. Lakshmanan was nominated to the Rajya Sabha as a DMK member
in 1974. He was later elected to the Lok Sabha in 1980 from North
Madras. He was the Deputy Speaker from 1980 to 1984.
After being expelled from the DMK in 1983, Mr. Lakshmanan
remained an unattached member in the Lok Sabha. He joined the
Congress in 1985. He is survived by wife, two sons and a
daughter.
