Ramanand subdues Rama Rao Rajana

By Nandakumar Marar

PIMPRI, JAN. 8. Punjab's flyweight Amrinder Singh survived three rounds against Olympian Suresh Singh of Central Industrial Security Force and Andhra Pradesh's featherweight Rama Rao Rajana also withstood international and Services Sports Control Board's S. Ramanand fury for three rounds before bowing out on the second day of the 47th Senior National boxing championships, at the Yeshwantrao Chavan Stadium, here on Monday.

The presence of these two internationals in the ring made up for a day when crude punchers vied for attention with the exceptions being the flyweight bout between Haryana's Naveen Dev and Uttar Pradesh's Anish Kumar Sharma and the featherweight fight between U.P's Janardhan Yadav against Orissa's Shiv Shankar Nayak.

Amrinder slipped into a defensive posture against Suresh, taking a lot of blows on his arms and body before the referee intervened to prevent further damage as the CISF star began unleashing his punches.

Rama Rao's refusal to be overawed by an opponent of Ramanand's class made for an absorbing contest, stretching over three rounds of non-stop action. The Services boxer stood out for his ring- craft, a mighty right punch followed two snap lefts developing into a sequence which made for exciting viewing for the hordes of schoolchildren in the stands before the referee stopped the contest in the third round.

The flyweight category bouts saw three knockouts with Tamil Nadu's Karl Marx, Rajasthan's S.K. Fahim and Madhya Pradesh's Dinesh Kumar Yadav finishing their opponents via the short route.

Marx's flurry of punches had Goa's Sushant Sawant doubling up in agony on the canvas, Fahim forced J & K's Mohd Sadeeq to take a count in the third after two rounds of sustained aggression and Yadav wore down Pondicherry's Mangesh Babu with ease.

The bouts, staged simultaneously in two rings, saw the judging switching from the computerised scoring system to the manual in ring two due to a detached wire. Fortunately, there were no close bouts and so fewer chances of questionable verdicts in the early rounds.
