Revival of three-year law course urged
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, JAN. 8. The Pondicherry wing of the Students'
Federation of India (SFI) has called upon the Administration to
revive the three-year law course in Dr. Ambedkar Government Law
College.
At the eighth annual SFI conference, the organisation passed a
resolution urging the authorities to reintroduce the course as
the facility was available in neighbouring Tamil Nadu. Expressing
concern over the rise in number of private professional colleges
in the Union Territory, the SFI said during the last five years,
three medical and four engineering colleges had been started and
as a result commercialisation of education was rampant. Calling
for restraint in issuing permission to private institutions, the
SFI said colleges should be started only by the Government.
The other demands were to make Pondicherry one of the examination
and interview centres for the Union Public Service Commission
selection, mother tongue the medium of instruction upto 10th
standard, implementation of recommendations of the State BC
Commission, sanction of sufficient funds for Dalit students,
buildings for women's hostels and creation of separate Education
Boards for the Union Territory.
The Federation secretary, Mr. P. Nalavendhan, detailed the
activities of the organisation. The SFI president, Mr. Sudhakar,
office-bearers, Mr. Stalin, Mr. Jayabarathi and Mr. Mohanraj,
spoke.
