Presidential nod for two Bills

NEW DELHI, JAN. 8.The President, Mr. K.R. Narayanan, has given assent to two Bills, including the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Bill 2000, which lays down the basic principles for administering justice to a juvenile or a child.

An official release today said the Bill also brings the law in conformity with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and seeks to create special juvenile police units with a human face.

The other Bill - Central Road Fund Bill, 2000 - replaces an ordinance promulgated on November 1, 2000, and seeks to provide funds for development of National Highways and other roads and railway crossings.

The Act gives statutory status to the Central Road Fund created by a Parliament resolution in 1988. The Bills were passed in the winter session of Parliament, December last.
