PF for unorganised workers

KOLKATA, JAN. 4. The West Bengal Government today introduced a ``State-assisted scheme of provident fund for unorganised workers'' covering about 30 lakh people with effect from January 1, 2001.

A gazette notification in this regard would be made soon, the State Finance Minister, Mr. Asim Dasgupta, said after announcing the scheme at the Secretariat. Mr. Dasgupta said the State Government had earmarked a budgetary provision of Rs. 60 crores annually for the purpose.

All wage-employed and self-employed workers between 18 and 55 years of age in the unorganised sector having an average family income of not more than Rs. 3,500 per month would come under the scheme.

Each subscriber would contribute a sum of Rs. 20 per month and a matching amount should be contributed by the State Government. Interest on the balance at the credit of a subscriber would also be paid by the State Government annually at the rate declared by the Government.

A list of 50 industries in the unorganised sectors and 16 self- employed occupations was also announced.
