Rally taken out in support of women's reservation

CHENNAI, JAN. 4. Demanding immediate implementation of a bill providing 33 per cent reservation for women in Legislatures, members of the National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW) took out a procession in the city today.

Members who assembled near the Rajiv Gandhi statue, Little Mount, Saidapet, raised slogans. The processionists presented signatures collected on sarees from various districts including Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur, Sivagangai, Madurai, Salem, Coimbatore, Dharmapuri, Tiruchi and Kancheepuram, to the Governor.

The signature campaign in support of the programme began on December 9 and a large number of men also signed in support of the organisation's demand, said Ms. P. Santhakumari, a vice- president of the federation.

A rally was taken out by the members from the Little Mount point and they were allowed to walk upto Saidapet Court. Some members led by Ms. Mala Pandian, president submitted a memorandum to the Governor, Ms. Fathima Beevi. The rally was flagged off by Ms. Amarjith Kaur, All India General Secretary, NFIW.
