Swift rescue of child by Mumbai police

MUMBAI, JAN. 2. In just a period of few days, the city police managed to rescue a two-and-a-half year-old child, Aryaman, from the clutches of five kidnappers hailing from Jharkhand.

``We executed the plan efficiently that too when we had no details of the accused or photographs,'' the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr. Rajender Singh, told newsmen here today. Aryaman, son of an exporter of readymade garments, Mr. Vikas Kataruka, was kidnapped on December 27 by their domestic servant.

On December 31 morning, the child was rescued from the kidnappers - a gang of five youth, aged between 22 and 30 years, all relatives. The child was kidnapped by Prakash Yadav, the domestic servant, outside his residence at Carter Road in Bandra. There was panic in the Kataruka family and they approached the police.

The cops swung into action and launched a combing operation and scanned through at least a hundred hotels. Rest houses were searched.

Mr. Singh told the news conference that on December 29 the Kataruka family received a call and the callers demanded a ransom of Rs. 50 lakhs. They asked them to reach Kodarma in Bihar with the ransom at Kodarma on December 30. They instructed the parents of the kidnapped child to catch the Howrah Mail and come there.

Police, however, sent an advance party of plain- clothed men and then asked the parents to follow. On reaching the station, they found three boys moving in a suspicious manner and apprehended them. On interrogation, they spilled the beans. Police later raided a hotel and rescued the child and arrested two more culprits.

The accused have been identified as Prakash Parameshwar Jadhav (20), Ganesh Bhuneshwar Jadhav (22), Dharmendra Narayan Jadhav (20), Pappu Dhukhi Yadav (20) and Suresh Tilak Yadav (20). All of them are from the Bongai village under the jurisdiction of Donchanch police station in Kodarma district and two of them were working as domestics in Mumbai. Mr. Singh said that Aryaman, the victim, was all right and there was no harm to him. ``Lust for money was the motive behind the case,'' he added.

He urged the residents of the city to register the names of their domestic servants and submit photographs of the same to local police stations to avoid such incidents.
