Court asks Centre to review crop holiday

By Our Legal Correspondent

HYDERABAD, DEC. 20. A Division Bench of the A.P. High Court on Wednesday directed the Central Government to reconsider and take a decision within two weeks on the issue of `tobacco crop holiday' in the State.

The Bench, comprising Mr.Justice B.Subhashan Reddy and Mr.Justice B.Prakash Rao, was dealing with a batch of writ appeals filed by some growers of tobacco crop from West Godavari district. The appellants were challenging the judgment of a single judge upholding the decision of crop holiday. By virtue of this holiday no one can grow tobacco in the State this year. The Bench took note of the offer made by the ITC which had come forward to purchase minimum quantity at minimum guarantee price. The Bench permitted the growers to nurture the crops till the decision was taken by the Central Government.
