Youth found guilty of murder

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, DEC. 15. Shanavas (20), a resident of Kadhinamkulam in Kazhakkuttom village, has been found guilty of murdering Sankar, a resident of Tamil Nadu, after robbing him of Rs. 1,000 at Thakaraparambu in the heart of the city on the night of March 16, 1999.

The verdict was pronounced by the Second Additional Sessions Judge, Mr. Sasidharan Nair, today. The sentence would be pronounced on December 18.

Sankar had been returning after having food from a "thattukada" at Thakaraparambu road with four others at around 10-30 p.m. when he was attacked.

Shanavas and four others came in an autorickshaw and stopped near them. Shanavas tried to snatch Rs. 1,000 from Sankar's pocket, but Sanker grappled with him. Shanavas then stabbed Sanker and the assailants escaped in the autorickshaw.

The police traced the vehicle and recovered the murder weapon and money from the accused. The prosecution was able to prove that the blood found on the knife, the currency notes and the autorickshaw, was that of Sankar.

The second and fifth accused in the case are still absconding. The former Fort Circle Inspector, Mr. J. Wilfred, investigated the case. The Public Prosecutor, Mr. K. Prasanna Kumar, appeared for the prosecution.
