Medha Patkar sues daily

NEW DELHI, DEC. 15. The Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) activist, Ms. Medha Patkar, today filed a criminal defamation case against the daily, The Indian Express in a city court for having carried an advertisement allegedly defaming to her and the Narmada movement.

Ms. Patkar named Mr. V.K. Saxena, president of the National Council for Civil Liberties, which had given the advertisement, the editor-in-chief of the The Indian Express, Mr. Shekhar Gupta and its publisher, Mr. G.R. Saxena, as accused.

The complaint also mentioned that the daily had carried a clarification later saying that the publication was merely an advertisement and the ``paper does not subscribe to contents of the views expressed therein''.
