NEW DELHI, DEC. 15. Three new bills were introduced in the Rajya Sabha today, including a far-reaching legislation to amend the Divorce Bill to ensure that women are not discriminated against and to cut short divorce proceedings.

The Indian Divorce (Amendment) Bill, 2000, was introduced by the Law Minister, Mr. Arun Jaitley, who described it as a comprehensive legislation to govern marriage and divorce and other allied aspects of Christians.

He said the Christian divorce law was being changed on the recommendations of the Law Commission and observations were made by a number of high courts.

The bill seeks to amend Section 10 of the Indian Divorce Act, 1869, to ensure that women are not discriminated against in obtaining a decree of dissolution of marriage and also to do away with procedural requirement of obtaining confirmation from high court for divorce.
