Christian divorce amendment bill
NEW DELHI, DEC. 15. Three new bills were introduced in the Rajya
Sabha today, including a far-reaching legislation to amend the
Divorce Bill to ensure that women are not discriminated against
and to cut short divorce proceedings.
The Indian Divorce (Amendment) Bill, 2000, was introduced by the
Law Minister, Mr. Arun Jaitley, who described it as a
comprehensive legislation to govern marriage and divorce and
other allied aspects of Christians.
He said the Christian divorce law was being changed on the
recommendations of the Law Commission and observations were made
by a number of high courts.
The bill seeks to amend Section 10 of the Indian Divorce Act,
1869, to ensure that women are not discriminated against in
obtaining a decree of dissolution of marriage and also to do away
with procedural requirement of obtaining confirmation from high
court for divorce.
Haj Committee Bill
The Haj Committee Bill, 2000, moved by the Minister of State for
External Affairs, Mr. Ajit Panja, provides for increase in the
number of Haj pilgrims from 24,000 to 72,000 this year and
changing the composition of the central Haj committee.
The new bill seeks to repeal and re-enact the Haj Committee Act
1959. The Vaccination (Repeal) Bill, 2000, moved by the Minister
of State for Health, Mr. A.Raja, seeks to do away with the
Vaccination Act 1880, which pertains to compulsory vaccination
for small pox.
