Flare-up in Gujarat
Sir, - Your thoughtful and timely Editorial ``Flare-up in Gujarat
again'' (The Hindu, Dec. 13) on the happenings to churches and
Christians in Gujarat must be a warning to the Government of
India to act in an intelligent manner as the whole world is
watching the brutal attacks on Christians in Gujarat in
particular.
The Sang Parivar must discuss matters with Christian leaders and
get proper views on all matters. Bishop Ezra Sargunam's mission
in a State where Gandhiji was born should be properly understood
by the Parivar outfits and the police force must act judiciously.
The attitude of the present government of Gujarat is dangerous
and the State Home Minister's ``aggressive Hindutva campaign''
must be silenced by the Government of India.
The Hindu has rightly pointed out that Mr. A.B. Vajpayee's
utterances during the past week are ``not just visceral''. Its
Editorial warnings that ``all those in power, both at the Centre
and in the various States'' must ensure ``that the rights
guaranteed by the Constitution are not trampled upon by a set of
storm troopers engaged in an incendiary campaign conjuring up
vicious stereotypes and imaginary wrongs'' must be understood by
the VHP and other outfits of the Sangh Parivar.
Let the glory of Hindu philosophy and religion be understood
clearly by the VHP and let them not damage that religion itself.
Thomas Edmunds,
Chennai
