dated December 13, 1950: Praise for India's initiative
Dr. Owen Lattimore, Johns Hopkins University expert on Far
Eastern affairs, said in an interview in Washington on December
11, that the U.S. had committed an act of ``unsound diplomacy''
when shortly after the outbreak of the Korean war it rejected
India's attempt to localise hostilities.
In a copyrighted interview in the U.S. News and World Report, Dr.
Lattimore had said: ``I think a mistake was made in clapping down
the Indian suggestion. I think that Indian move was somewhat
misrepresented as an offer to mediate. My understanding was that
the Indians were not offering to mediate but they were suggesting
that while they supported resistance to aggression in Korea, they
believed that diplomatic discussion should be opened up parallel
to military action. In turning down the Indian proposal, we
virtually cut off avail ourselves of the opportunity to talk but
virtually cut off the channel of possible talk.''
President Truman's wrath:
Mr. Truman creates a sensation in the country by threatening to
beat Paul Hume, the music critic of Washington Post, who berated
the singing of Mr. Truman's daughter, Margaret.
The President's letter, which was published in newspapers all
over the country read: ``I have just read a lousy review buried
in the back pages. You sound like a frustrated old man who never
made a success, an eight-ulcer man on a four-ulcer job and all
the four ulcers working. I have never met you; but if I do, you
will need a new nose and plenty of beefsteak and perhaps a
supporter below.
