PMK seeks Centre's intervention in Pondy
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, DEC. 12. Mr. P. Sankaran, vice-president of the
PMK's Tamil Nadu unit, has called upon the Centre to intervene
immediately and dismiss the Pondicherry Ministry headed by Mr. P.
Shanmugham and notify elections to the Territorial Assembly.
In a statement here today, Mr. Sankaran said the government had
no legal or moral right to govern as all democratic norms had
been trampled upon.
He said that right from day one when the present Ministry came
into existence, there had been several discrepancies and Mr.
Shanmugham himself assumed office first without being a member of
the Assembly.
Mr. Sankaran said that when Mr. Kannan had come out with grave
allegations against the Cooperation Minister, Mr. Jayakumar, the
Chief Minister had not bestired himself to take any action
against the latter. The silence was continued by Mr. Shanmugham
even when Mr. Kannan presented evidence on the floor of the House
recently in respect of certain allegations.
Instead of taking action on the written memorandum Mr. Kannan
presented on Sunday last to the Chief Minister, a dramatic
decision was taken to sack Mr. Kannan. He said one was left
suspecting that there had been political motives on the part of
the present rulers in handling very serious situations. Hence
both on legal or on moral grounds the present Ministry had no
right to remain in office. The Centre should intervene and dismiss
the government, Mr. Sankaran said.
