Anniversary of Madhuram centre celebrated
By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI, DEC. 12. The important role played by parents in the
care and education of exceptional children was to the forefront
today at the 11th anniversary celebrations of the Madhuram
Narayanan Centre (MNC) for Exceptional Children.
As the children took the stage to exhibit their many talents,
their parents also stepped in giving the audience wholesome
entertainment.
MNC was set up in December 1989, with financial support from the
Madhuram Narayanan Charitable Trust to train children with
developmental delays/ mental retardation in the age group 0-2
years. Their training is based on a systematic early intervention
programme called `Upanayan' developed indigenously. This includes
orientation for the mothers to train their children to do all
their tasks themselves. The mothers function as carry over agents
to continue the training in the course of the normal activities
of the children at home.
Those, who took the stage later to pay compliments on the
occasion, praised the school for training parents along with
children. Ms. Sheela Balakrishnan, social welfare secretary,
urged MNC to ensure that their technique and knowledge was shared
with other organisations working for the rehabilitation of
children with disabilities.
Mr. M. Kalaivanan, Commissioner for the Rehabilitation of the
Disabled, assured the support of the state for further
development in the treatment of the disabled.
Mr. V. R. Deenadayalu, former CMD, MRL and Ms. Vimala Kannan,
principal of the school, also spoke.
