Sikh panel summons Jagir Kaur

AMRITSAR, DEC. 12.

The Sikh Gurdwara Judicial Commission (SGJC) today issued summons to former SGPC president, Bibi Jagir Kaur, for January 22 in connection with a case of ``unauthorised'' payments against her.

Bibi's secretary, Mr. Gurbachan Singh Bachan and personal assistant, Mr. Harjit Singh, have also been summoned.

The summons were issued on a petition filed by the Akali leader, Mr. Harbhajan Singh Brar, who has alleged that the trio made ``unauthorised'' payments between October 1 and November 30 without prior sanction of the SGPC executive.

Hearing the petition, the three-member commission, headed by Sgjc chairman Manmohan Singh Brar, asked Bibi Jagir Kaur to explain her viewpoint about the allegations.

The petition alleged that though the respondents were authorised to sanction only Rs. 10,000 without the prior sanction of the SGPC executive, they had made payments worth more than Rs. 35 lakhs.

Meanwhile, the executive committee meeting of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) today witnessed voices of dissent over the appointment of Giani Puran Singh as the head granthi (priest) of the Golden Temple.

The meeting was chaired by the new SGPC president, Jathedar Jagdev Singh Talwandi. Besides SGPC officer-bearers, members of the executive were present.

According to the SGPC sources, before the matter of Giani Puran Singh's appointment could be discussed, it was decided to defer the issue till tomorrow. The meeting which concluded late this evening will resume tomorrow.
