dated December 11, 1950: Education for Harmony
President Dr. Rajendra Prasad delivered the Chancellor's address
at the 28th Convocation of Delhi University, and said, ``Chasms
and gulfs which exist at present in the inner structure of
individual personality and in social life in India have to be
filled up. If we dilly- dally with this problem, not only our
independence, but even our existence, will be in jeopardy. The
main aim of education is establishing a two-fold harmony: harmony
in every individual within his own self, and harmony with others
in the outside world. The dangers of split-personality exist in
every society in the world, but they are much greater in India
which has several cultures, many historic traditions, and
numerous social systems... We should settle it in our mind that
we must establish complete harmony following the historic
traditions of our country.''
Nehru on Foreign Affairs
Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, replying to the debate in
Parliament on international affairs, made many a humorous sally;
he noted that opinions by speakers in the House had varied
greatly. Between the extremes of Mr. Masani and Mr. Brajeshwar
Prasad, other members had ``wandered about'' (laughter).
Practically everyone concerned with foreign affairs was trying to
grope in surrounding semi-darkness. Mr. Masani feared a great
tragedy if President Truman and Prime Minister Attlee decided to
appease China. It was a pity, Pandit Nehru said, that Mr. Masani
was not in the White House at Washington to advise!
