Asia Cup from tomorrow

By Raju Chainani

KUALA LUMPUR, DEC. 10 The winner's cheque of $ 2,850 would have made Ong Beng Hee's pocket warmer. More important were the 350 ranking points he gets which should seen him break into the top twenty in the PSA's New Year's list.

The icing on the cake....Beng Hee figures alongside four world champions--Jahangir, Jansher, Rodney Eyles and Rodney Martin amd two world number twos-Qamar Zaman and Chris Dittmar-all previous winners of the Malaysian men's Open.

His win over Australia's John Williams was before a capacity crowd at the NSC Courts in Jalan Duta.

Tunku Imran (President Emeritus of the WSF) and Mokhzani Mahathir (President of the ASF) watched with interest as the 20 year-old made it an afternoon to remember. The Malaysian Open was initiated in 1975 but there has been no local player who has gone the distance.

Beng Hee has changed that and now he spearheads Malaysia's attack in the Mulpha Head Asia squash Cup which starts on Tuesday.
