Leaders vow to realise Nijalingappa's dream

By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE, DEC. 10. The S. Nijalingappa National Trust has been formed with Mr. Ramakrishna Hegde as its President and today, on the 99th birthday of the late leader, the trust avowed itself to take up several programmes across the country to highlight the values and principles he stood for.

The Chief Minister, Mr. S.M. Krishna, who was the chief guest, said his Government had made a commitment to provide drinking water supply to S. Nijalingappa's hometown of Chitradurga soon. He said he was awaiting the report of the Committee constituted for this purpose. It was Nijalingappa's regret that he could not make provision for drinking water supply to Chitradurga when he was the Chief Minister and even later, he added.

Talking about the values Nijalingappa stood for, Mr. Krishna said while values had been declining over the past 50 years, there had to be a reference point with regard to values and that reference point was Nijalingappa.

Mr. Hegde said the trust would chalk out programmes which were dear to Nijalingappa. The trust comprised eminent persons such as Dr. Raja Ramanna, Dr. L.C. Jain and Mr. Shivaraj Patil among others.

Mr. Hegde said it was not the intention of the trust to have any street named after Nijalingappa or a statue installed. Nijalingappa's contribution was such that if his programmes were implemented it would mean much more to the people.
