All-party meet on Rajasthan drought sought

By Our Special Correspondent

JAIPUR, DEC. 9. The Left parties and their allies in Rajasthan have demanded an all- party meeting to discuss the severity of the drought in the State.

There was also a need for all the political parties to exert pressure on the Centre to provide more finances to Rajasthan to fight the drought conditions, the leaders of the parties told newspersons here.

The leaders of the CPI(M), the CPI, the CPI(ML), Samajwadi Party and the Janata Dal (Secular) said at a joint Press conference that they had submitted a memorandum on various issues to the Chief Minister, Mr. Ashok Gehlot, some time back. As the Chief Minister did not either respond or even acknowledge receipt of the memorandum, their agitation against the State Government would be intensified, they said.

The CPI(M) State secretary, Mr. Hariram Chouhan, said the memorandum outlined the serious situation Rajasthan was facing at present due to scarcity of power, water and fodder. Despite claims by the Government, nowhere in the State were farmers being supplied eight hours power, he charged.
