Maithri sanghams to start de-addiction centres
By Our Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD, DEC.7. De-addiction centres to get over the problem of
drunkenness in men are proposed to be started under the aegis of
Maithri sangham.
This was announced here on Thursday by Dr. C.R. Naidu, DIG,
Community Relations and Maithri. Reviewing the Maithri sangham's
programme, which he described as a philosophy and as an organised
strategy to prevent crime, Dr. Naidu stated that the de-addiction
centres would take shape his tour to Tamil Nadu on December 15
and 16. He said the centres were working effectively in the
neighbouring State.
This was the first review of the programme after its introduction
in April this year for the first time in the country. It had
proved to be a good beginning and a reform process that had
emerged from within the department.
The DIG stated that he had toured 10 districts in the State to
study the working of Maithri sanghams set up in 1,500 police
stations throughout the State as well to assess the problems
faced by the members and identify the steps needed to solve them.
After the tour, he said the main problems the police had to deal
with were eve teasing and unwieldy traffic. Drunken men were also
proving to be a headache. The tour revealed that members of
Maithri sanghams were involved in patrolling and taking steps to
check factionism, rowdy and drunken behaviour besides counselling
to settle family disputes.
He advised members of the Maithri sanghams to help the police
maintain law and order, peace and amity and to remove fear among
the people. They should hold monthly meetings, fix targets and
strive to achieve them.
At the same, the DIG advised the people not to be indifferent to
the happenings around them because "crime is opportunistic and
should be checked even if it was of a minor nature. If people
ignore small crimes, the offenders become bold and go on to
commit bigger crimes. Community policing should be used to
prevent such incidents".
Ms. Vijayalakshmi, a BHEL employee, Ms. Bharatamma, Mr. A.
Srinivas, the convener, Mr. Purnanadam, Mr. Nagaswaminathan,
Mr.Ganesh Singh, Mr. B. Gurucharanam, Dr. Anjaneyulu, Mr. Ramesh
and Mr. Muralidhar, members of the Maithri sanghams working in
the north zone, spoke about their experiences and made some
suggestions.
Earlier, Mr. M. Punna Rao, DCP, North Zone, welcomed the
gathering. Mr. Ramana Rao, ACP, Ramgopalpet, explained the
concept of Maithri. Messrs Madhusudhan and Narender Reddy, ACPs
of Marredpally and Begumpet respectively, besides CIs of almost
all police stations in the zone attended.
