Kannur violence: Pinarayi sees plot by RSS leadership

By Our Staff Reporter

KANNUR, DEC. 7. The CPI(M) State secretary, Mr. Pinarayi Vijayan, today alleged that the bomb attack on the CPI(M) district secretary, Mr. E. P. Jayarajan, near Panur on December 2 that sparked off the outbreak of violence in the area was carried out as part of a conspiracy hatched by the RSS with the knowledge of the its Central leadership, including a Union Minister hailing from the nearby State.

After visiting the houses of the CPI(M) workers killed in the recent violence in Panur and Koothuparamba areas, Mr Vijayan told reporters here that the attack on Mr. Jayarajan was not locally planned in response to any provocation from CPI(M) workers.

It was a pre-planned attack intended to unleash large- scale violence and disrupt peace in the region, he said.

``Unfortunately, the Central leadership of the RSS was involved in the conspiracy, especially a Union Minister from the neighbouring State'', he said. The Minister had visited the area at various stages and gave men and money for the RSS units here to create law and order problems here, he said.

Mr. Vijayan said he would divulge the name of the Minister later. Stating that there were cases of persons from other States having been arrested in connection with the incidents of violence here, he said the Kannur situation should be seen in the backdrop of the RSS meeting at Cherukolpuzha attended by the RSS leader, Mr. H.V. Sheshadri, that decided to focus on Kannur.

The bomb attacks on CPI(M) leaders, including MLAs at Thodeekalam on December 4, were carried out with the active involvement of RSS workers from outside.

The RSS leaders' claim that the incident of attack on Mr. Jayarajan was fabricated by the CPI(M) itself revealed their organisation's fascist practice of circulating cooked-up stories to create trouble, Mr. Vijayan said adding that the communal riots in Thalassery in 1971 had exemplified the RSS tactics of spreading rumours.

The CPI(M) leader said that the party's commitment to the peace efforts initiated by the Chief Minister last year was unequivocal while the BJP-RSS leadership continued to use provocative language in public speeches.

The CPI(M) workers had not retaliated when a party worker, Sajeevan, was killed at Koyyod shortly after the Chief Minister's peace meeting and another worker, Rajeesh, was murdered at Kolassery last month, he said.

The attack on Mr. Jayarajan was to provoke retaliation, he added.

Flaying the Congress(I) for not condemning the RSS attacks on the CPI(M) leadership, Mr. Vijayan reiterated his allegation that both the Congress(I) and the BJP wanted to extend their experimental alliance in some parts of the State during the last local bodies election to the coming Assembly election.

Both the parties wanted to create an atmosphere favourable for such an unholy alliance, he said. Neither the Congress(I) nor the BJP-RSS condemned the attempt on Mr. Jayarajan's life, he added.

Mr. Vijayan said that the RSS attacks on the police were intended to push the region into a dangerous situation and to disrupt established systems of law enforcement.

While calling for deployment of the Army in Kannur, the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. A.K. Antony, conveniently ignored the RSS attacks on the police, he pointed out. To a query, Mr. Vijayan categorically denied the reported efforts of the State leadership of the CPI(M) and the BJP-RSS to initiate direct discussion on the Kannur violence. ``As a party, the CPI(M) does not want any special concession from the police,'' he said.
