Call to safeguard music quality

CHENNAI, DEC. 5. The traditions of quality in music should be zealously guarded, speakers at the inaugural of the sixth fine arts festival of Mudhra observed here today.

Inaugurating the festival, Mr. N. Ram, Editor, Frontline, said the Chennai music season was probably the biggest annual music and dance fete in the world. Keeping with its rich tradition it continued to attract young talent, though there was criticism that the increasing number of concerts had resulted in sacrifice of quality to a certain extent.

The `Mudhra Award of Excellence' carrying a cash component of Rs.5,000, citation and a shawl was presented to critic, musician and composer, Mrs.Sulochana Pattabhiraman by Mr. Ram on the occasion.

The citation said the award was in recognition of her `talent, dedication and service to Carnatic music.'

The Director of Madras University's Students Advisory Bureau, Dr. Susila Mariappan, said besides yoga, music was looked upon as a ``medium capable of reducing fatigue and tension.''

For classical form to reach the doorstep of the community, it should be made available in the ``language'' that could be easily understood even by beginners, Mr. R. Kothandaraman, Managing Director, Deltagram said.

The Station Director of AIR, Mr. B.R. Kumar, said Mrs. Sulochana possessed deep insight into classical music including its finer nuances. Mr. Mudhra Kumar, sabha secretary, among others spoke.
