CB-CID to probe 'train bomb' case
By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI, DEC. 5. The CB-CID (SIT) will probe the case relating to
the seizure of the bomb and the timer device from one of the
compartments of Jammu-Tawi Express on Monday, Dr. R. Rajagopalan,
the Director General of Police, said here today.
The seized explosive material was defused by the Bomb Detection
and Disposal Squad (BDDS) at Veerapuram Firing Range near Avadi
this morning, according to police sources. It is said one kg of
explosive material mixed with splinters (nails) was packed in the
cylinder and the explosive was similar to the one used in
crackers.
As per the timing set, the `bomb' should have exploded by the
time the train reached Nagpur station. Fortunately, no untoward
incident occurred as the wristwatch did not work. Even if it had
exploded, it would not have caused heavy damage. They suspected
that it should have been planted just to create panic, said the
sources.
Meanwhile, an unclaimed bag in the Jammu Tawi Express, which
arrived at Chennai Central this afternoon, created a scare among
RPF, railway police and railway personnel. The unclaimed bag was
noticed by RPF personnel in one of the reserved compartments
after passengers got down from the train.
Immediately, RPF and railway police swung into action and
requested passengers and public to move out of the place. When
the bag was checked with the help of a sniffer dog, it was found
to contain a few clothes and a tiffin box with some food.
The Southern Railway General Manager, Mr. Ajit Kishore, today
announced a cash award of Rs. 3000 each to four employees who
averted major train disaster on Monday by their timely detection
of the explosive device.
The employees are Mr.N.Elumalai (fitter), Mr.P.Moorthy (fitter),
Mr.S.Sugendran (head constable) and Mr.N.Kabilan (RPF constable).
The award was distributed by the Additional General Manager,
Mr.S.Gopalakrishnan, here today.
