Villagers ensure surrender of two naxals
By Our Staff Reporter
KARIMNAGAR, DEC. 5. In a major breakthrough, people of interior
Ankushapur village of Kataram mandal ensured surrender of two
semi-underground CPI-ML Janashakthi Veeranna faction naxalites on
Tuesday at a grama sabha organised by the police as part of the
village adoption scheme.
The Kataram Circle Inspector, Mr. Madhumohan Reddy, and the sub-
inspector, Mr. Sadanandam, were frequently visiting the interior
naxalite-affected village and organising grama sabhas and holding
counselling programme with the extremists' parents and relatives
urging them to ensure surrender of naxalites.
Accordingly, on Tuesday at the grama sabha organised by the
police, the villagers brought two naxalites, who were involved in
various offences, to surrender. The surrendered naxalites are
Challa Posham and Shaik Shabbir, both in the age group of 25
years. Three warrants were pending against Posham and two
warrants against Shabbir. They were active members of the
Janashakthi group and indulging in beating of targeted persons
and resorting to violent acts of setting ablaze various
properties and indulging in extortion.
The Godavarikhani DSP, Mr. M. Ramesh, said that the villagers
responded to the call given by the police positively and ensured
the surrender of misled youth from the naxalite groups. He said
that the two naxalites surrendered before the entire village of
over 500 members and vowed not to join the underground dalam in
future. He said that villagers had also urged the police to
withdraw cases against the surrendered naxalites so that they
could lead a normal life.
He said the Kataram police settled five cases - three matrimonial
disputes, one land dispute and a chit fund case - during the
grama sabha and won the confidence of the people. When the
villagers complained that the naxalites had deposited Rs. 24,000,
which was collected from beedi leaves contractors, with three
villagers, the police asked the villagers about the money. They
assured the police that the money would be utilised for
developmental activities of the village, he added.
The Godavarikhani DSP said that the police had constituted a
youth committee in the village with 15 members and provided them
with a volleyball and a net. The DSP said the villagers of
Kataram had told the police that they would make seven PWG
naxalites surrender very soon. He said that in 23 other police-
adopted villages, people were working for the surrender of
naxalites.
