Orissa teachers court arrest
By Our Staff Reporter
BHUBANESWAR, DEC. 4. Thousands of teachers from a large number of
aided and non-aided schools and colleges of Orissa held a rally
in front of the State Assembly here today to highlight their
demands.
The teachers are protesting against the freezing of grant-in-aid
for educational institutions and capping of educational
expenditure. They are also demanding a substantial increase in
the Government's expenditure on education. According to the
Shikshak Mahasangh, a large number of teachers were detained by
police in different parts of Bhubaneswar as well as far off
places.
The teachers, including 125 who courted arrest during the
demonstration, were released late in the afternoon. As many as 50
platoons of policemen were deployed around the Assembly building
and the demonstration passed off peacefully.
Later, the Mahasangh representatives held a meeting with the
Chief Minister, Mr. Naveen Patnaik.
