Mayavati claims Muslims, upper castes backing
By Our Special Correspondent
LUCKNOW, NOV. 29. The Bahujan Samaj Party leader, Ms Mayawati,
today said her party had improved its performance in the just
held urban local bodies elections in Uttar Pradesh at the cost of
both the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Samajwadi Party.
Talking to newspersons here, Ms. Mayawati said the results had
indicated that in western UP, especially among Muslims and
sections of upper castes, the SP and the BJP had been rejected.
As a consequence, while the BSP candidates had given a tough
challenge to the BJP, the SP nominees lost their security
deposits. Results in Agra, Aligarh, Meerut, Moradabad and
Bareilly had shown similar trends where the BSP had improved its
performance but the SP had lost much of its ground held earlier.
Giving her own analysis of the results, Ms. Mayawati said Muslims
earlier stood solidly behind the SP everywhere but now had now
changed their behaviour. It was basically a shift in Muslim votes
which was responsible for the remarkable performance of her party
in the urban local bodies elections in western UP.
