Interactive website on cancer soon

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, NOV. 25. A interactive Website, which would be beneficial for patients and doctors, will be introduced by the Regional Cancer Centre by next month, according to its director, Dr. M. Krishnan Nair.

Disclosing this while speaking at the international seminar on ``Knowledge-based society to the 21st century'' organised at the Technopark here today in connection with IT Kerala 2000, Dr. Nair said the aim of the project was to bring Medicare to doorsteps.

The RCC director said the incidence of uterine cancer was on the higher side in Kerala compared to other countries. Telemedicine will help to detect the disease in the preliminary stage and to reduce the death rate drastically, he added.

The real advantage of telemedicine can be enjoyed only if the infrastructure facilities are improved, according to Ms. Sangita Reddy of Apollo Hospital, Chennai. She pointed out that there is a dearth of specialists in the health sector. As specialists are based in the city, 80 per cent of the population, which lives in villages, were not able to get their services. A live telemedicine conference was organised at the seminar. The director of the Online Telemedicine Research Institute, Mr. Rajesh Jha, also spoke at the seminar.
