Pak. army, air force on alert
The Pakistan army and air force have been put on high alert as India is all set to conduct three major exercises near Pakistan's western and southern borders. Quoting sources, the Pakistan Observer reported that the alert was ordered to avert any untoward incident during the air exercises by the Indian Air Force. The IAF would be backed by the ground forces for an ``integrated war plan'' exercises.

Contest still likely for Cong. president
The process of electing the Congress president gained momentum today with an overwhelming 74 sets of nomination papers being filed, all in favour of the incumbent, Ms. Sonia Gandhi, a day before nominations close. Although a contest is still not ruled out, there is hardly any doubt in the minds of party workers that the outcome would be in favour of Ms. Gandhi.

Buddhadev emerges out of the shadows
Mr. Buddhadev Bhattacharya will be the new Chief Minister of West Bengal from November 6 as the State's ruling Left Front today accepted Mr. Jyoti Basu's offer to retire from the office of Chief Minister on health grounds. Mr. Basu's event-packed innings in office spread over 24 years may have come to an end today when the Front partners, honouring the Chief Minister's sentiments, formally ratified the proposal which on Thursday had been accepted by Mr.Basu's party.

Rajnath Singh retains Gupta ministry
Mr. Rajnath Singh was today sworn in Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh along with 85 Ministerial colleagues, by the Governor, Mr. Suraj Bhan. Mr. Singh told mediapersons later that additions to the rank were likely in November. It was indeed a grand BJP show, after years, on the sprawling lawns of Lucknow's Raj Bhavan. And for the first time, many non-BJP Ministers and Chief Ministers turned up for the swearing-in ceremony of a BJP Government.
