J&K police renew pledge to wipe out militancy

SRINAGAR, OCT. 21. `Police Commemoration Day' was observed in Jammu and Kashmir with renewed commitment to wipe out militancy and restore peace and tranquility in the State.

Addressing the State-level function at the armed police headquarters at Zewan, the Minister of State for Home, Mr. Mushtaq Ahmad Lone, said the State police force with modern weaponry, increased man power, mobility and above all grit and motivation, was well-equipped to meet the challenges in weeding out the decade-long militancy in the State.

Paying rich tributes to the officers and jawans who sacrificed their lives for the security and integrity of the country in general and the State in particular, he said ``though there will be no let-up in our fight against militancy, efforts will continue to restore peace through dialogue''.

Mr. Lone appealed to the misguided youth to shun the path of violence and bloodshed and join hands in bringing back peace in the State. Ex-gratia relief had been enhanced from Rs. 2 lakhs to Rs. 5 lakhs, he said, adding a meeting of police welfare committee would be held at Jammu shortly to provide facilities to the families of police personnel killed in the anti- militancy drive.

The State police chief, Mr. Gurbachan Jagat, said 126 police personnel were killed while fighting militancy last year.
