Move to wind up French school opposed

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, OCT. 21. The Association of Parents and Teachers of the French Section (Section Francaise) in the 110-year-old Calve College situated on Mission Street here on Thursday presented a memorandum to the Tourism Minister, Mr. N. Rangaswamy protesting against the move of the Administration to wind up the section.

Mr. Arima Valavan, secretary of the association who distributed copies of the memorandum to mediapersons said the section dating back to the 19th century was created on the basis of a testament executed by the philanthropist, Calve Sri Subbaraya Chettiar. The Administration recently amalgamated the French wing in the Middle school with the Calve College`s French section. This has raised the students strength in the popular school.

Mr. Arima Valavan said there was information that the Administration had now resolved to wind up the French section as a whole and transfer the students attached to the section to the Pensionnat De Jeunes Filles.

The association said such a measure would militate against the contents and intention of the will through which the building was donated. The French section is the only institution available for boys to do courses in the French. If this is disturbed there would be a setback to youth inclined to have French education here, Mr. Valavan said.

He sought the intervention of the Tourism Minister to save the situation.
