TN steals the show

HYDERABAD OCT 20. Tamil Nadu athletes dominated the proceedings on the second day of the south zone junior athletic championships at the Lal Bahadur stadium here today. They shattered three national marks in their respective age groups as the state picked up twelve golds on the second day alone.

One of the outstanding performers was M. Sangeetha, who had two golds yesterday (including a meet record in the high jump), bettered her yesterday's high jump record (1.63m) while she was taking part in the pentathlon by clearing the bar at 1.65 metres. The tall and lanky 15-year old from Chennai also won a bronze in the javelin throw to show her class as an all round athlete.

S. Lakshminarayana of TN broke the national record in the triple jump for boys under 18 by clearing 14.80 metres. He broke the old national record of 14.75 set by Bennet Raja of AP in 1998 and also the south zone record of 14.57 metres set by Praveen Kumar of Kerala in 1998. Lakshminarayana is a second year B. Com student of Loyola College Chennai.

G. Subha also of TN broke the national record in the hammer throw for girls under 20 by chalking up a distance of 47.92 metres. The old record of 46.94 mts was held by international Jobeshwari Devi representing Bengal in 1999. The south zone record was held by Subha herself at 43.07 mts which she had set in 1999. Subha also won the gold in discuss.

Pooja Merita Jose of TN broke the national record in the shot put for girls under 16 when she chalked up a distance of 11.13 metres. The old national record was in the name of A. D'Souza at 10.75 metres . The old south zone record was held by Pooja at 10.64 mts which she created in 1999.
