Merit recognised

THE GROWING number of participants for the Carnatic music competition, both in vocal and instrumental, conducted by the Indian Fine Arts Society recently, showed that this notable art was containing the imagination of youth. Out of a total 140 contestants, aged between nine and 22, more than 50 enlisted for Muthuswami Dikshitar's kritis, 48 for Papanasam Sivan's and 35 for Thiruppugazh.

In the instrumental variety, mridangam showed up with 22 and violin, a bare six. There was no entry for veena. V. K. Arun Kumar got the largest number of prizes (14), accounting for five first prizes among them.
