Asia's biggest tourney in India
By Our Special Correspondent
MUMBAI, OCT. 19: The Millennium Super Soccer Cup 2001, billed as
one of Asia's biggest football events with prize money worth
$150,000 for the winning team, will be played in three cities -
Calcutta, Kochi and Margao - between January 10 to 25, 2001.
The event will comprise 16 national sides, including India, and
has been approved by the Asian Football Confederation and
Federation Internationale de Football Association, according to
Studio 2100, the official sponsor, who are organising the
tournament in association with the All India Football Federation.
The team finishing second will get $ US 100,000, the second
runner-up $50,000, apart from $25,000 for the team winning the
Fair Play award. The prize money is in keeping with an event
sanctioned by the AFC and FIFA, said Henna Juneja, CEO of Studio
2100.
The teams and groupings have yet to be finalised, though as per
the tentative schedule, the 16 teams will be split into four
groups - two groups comprising eight teams based at one city, the
other two groups with four teams each playing at the other two
venues. The inaugural and final matches will be played at
Calcutta.
