Warning against bursting crackers on busy roads

CHENNAI, OCT. 19. Action would be taken against persons who burst crackers on busy thoroughfares and near hospitals, the city Police Commissioner, Mr. P. Kalimuthu, warned today.

Speaking to mediapersons, he said that crackers should not be burst between 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and advised the children to exercise caution while bursting crackers.

Police have stepped up vigil in the shopping areas with the installation of temporary watch-towers and additional police outposts.

However, he advised those going for shopping in crowded areas to take necessary precautions. A three-member gang which attempted to steal from a shop on Ranganathan Street was arrested, he added.

The Commissioner warned that action would be taken against shop- owners who detain customers on suspicion. Any person, suspected to have committed a crime, should be handed over to the police. The customers should not be interrogated by private security personnel, he said.

Use of loud-speakers was banned and action would be taken against anyone using them. The law against use of loud speakers would be enforced strictly from Thursday.

On the traffic front, police have registered about 8.10 lakh cases against motorists for various offences. Over 17,000 motorists were booked for using musical horns, 25,000 motorists for rash and negligent driving and 3000 persons for drunken driving.

He said that action would be taken against wine shop owners which were doing business after 11 p.m. and those which had illegal bars attached to them.
