Need for health awareness among girls

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, OCT. 19. The need for health awareness among adolescent girls was emphasised at the inaugural of `Pudumai Penn project' launched by an NGO, `Health First'.

Dr. Srinidhi Chidambaram, Technical Director, Health First, told mediapersons that it would be a holistic health and empowerment package for adolescent girls in Chennai.

As a pilot project, 40 adolescent girls from MS Nagar, Dhobikana and Brindavanam slum areas of Chetpet will be covered under the programme. The number of girls to be included in the programme will be increased gradually and the progress will be evaluated for a period of three years, before extending it to other areas in the city.

The activities in the programme included socio-demographic survey, health education, legal and psycho-social counselling, economic enhancement, vocational training and preventive health care.

Later, inaugurating the project Mr. N. Veeraswamy, Health Minister, said that though several schemes were introduced by the Government for the benefit of women, very few could benefit from them due to suppression of their rights in society.

Dr. J. Radhakrishnan, Corporation Commissioner, and Mr. B. Ranganathan, MLA, participated.
