CPI for one-day poll

By Our Special Correspondent

SALEM, OCT. 19. The state executive of the CPI which began its two-day session here on Thursday passed a resolution calling upon the authorities to conduct the forthcoming Assembly elections on a single day all over the State.

It said EPIC (electors photo identity cards) should be made mandatory, and all efforts ought to be taken to issue the cards well before the elections. The whole exercise of issuing ID cards remained befuddled due to many lacaunae, and these ought to be set right at the earliest, it said.

In another resolution it called upon the State government to prevent the move of the Central Government to privatise the Salem Steel Plant.

The State Assembly had passed a resolution favouring retention of the steel plant in the public sector itself. However, no proper follow- up action had been taken on this.

When the West Bengal Government protested against the proposal to privatise the Durgapur Steel Plant, the Central Government yielded.

However, in the case of the Salem Steel Plant, the Central Government was going ahead with its plan, as there had been no worthwhile resistance from the State Government.

Those who participated in the meeting included Mr. R. Nallakannau, state secretary, Mr. T. Pandian, Mr. S. S. Thiagarajan, state deputy secretary, former MP, Mr. K. Subbarayan, Mr. G. Palanisamy and Mr. N. Periasamy, MLAs, Mr. S. R. Perumal, Salem district secretary and others.
