Punjab farmers call off stir
CHANDIGARH, OCT. 16. Farmers in Punjab, who had launched a
massive stir on Oct. 13 including rail blockade on paddy
procurement issue, today called off their agitation following the
Centre's announcement of relief package for the farmers of the
State.
A report from Sangrur said that the farmers at Tapa Mandi station
cleared the rail tracks early this morning. This led to
resumption of services of more than a dozen local trains,
including the Dhuri-Bhatinda inter-city, which had been either
cancelled or diverted.
The agitation, which was launched by five Kisan unions, including
Bhartiya Kisan Union (EKTA), Punjab Kisan Sabha, Kirti Kisan
Sabha, All-India Kisan Sabha and Punjab Khet Majdoor Sabha, was
mainly concentrated in Bathinda, Mansa and Sangrur districts of
the Malwa region, leading to disruption of rail services on the
main Ferozepur-Ludhiana line.
