CM promises help to Nasreen Banu
By Our Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD, OCT. 16. The Chief Minister, Mr. N. Chandrababu Naidu,
on Monday assured Ms. Nasreen Banu, who lost her sight following
gross medical negligence at Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital in 1980,
of all possible help from the Government.
Her case wherein doctors callously removed the healthy right eye
when they were supposed to have operated on her malignant left
eye - she was just two years old then - had stirred the
collective conscience of the nation.
The 22-year old Ms. Banu along with her mother, Mrs. Mehmooda
Begum, met the Chief Minister here and apprised him of her
family's grave financial situation.
In a memorandum, Mrs. Mehmooda Begum urged the Chief Minister to
provide some constant means of support to her daughter. "She has
neither the monetary nor social support to stand on her own feet
and I am struggling to make both ends meet," she lamented. Banu's
father, Bahadur Khan, who was a machine operator in the erstwhile
Allwyn Metal Works, died fighting an unending Court battle with
the authorities of the Medical and Health Department in 1993,
"leaving us in penury and we even gave up the case as we could
not afford the costs".
