Exhibition on gastro-intestinal problems
By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI, OCT. 16. An exhibition and public symposium on
preventive and curative aspects of gastro-intestinal problems,
`GUT-2000' will be organised in the city from October 20 to 22.
The exhibition on various aspects of gastrointestinal diseases
will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Raja Muthiah Hall on all
the three days, said Prof. N. Rangabashyam, former Head of
Department, Surgical Gastroenterology & Proctology, Government
General Hospital.
`While illnesses such as cancer have lethal connotations and
attract public attention, it is little realised that 60 per cent
of all hospitalisation is for digestive and gastro-intestinal
disorders. Nearly half of them were preventable. Environmental
and nutritional factors, life style and stress contribute greatly
to the various ailments,' he said and added that the best method
of prevention is by creation of awareness among people on the
aspects of gastrointestinal problems.
The programme is organised by the Dr. N. R. Research and
Digestive Disease Educational Trust, created with the objective
of initiating academic analyses on gastro-intestinal disorders
and creating public awareness.
A panel of experts will answer questions at the end of each day
at the exhibition venue. On October 20 and 21, it will be between
6 p.m. and 8 p.m. and on October 22, the public symposium will be
held between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.
