PCB, team sign deal on match-fixing penalties

KARACHI, OCT. 4. The Pakistan cricket team members have signed a new contract with their board, prior to their departure for Nairobi to participate in the ICC knockout tournament, that lays down severe penalties for match-fixing, reports said on Wednesday.

The contract lays down a strict code of conduct for the players, also forbidding them from inviting guests to their hotel rooms without approval of the management.

On the match-fixing issue, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has put down all the clauses forwarded to all cricket boards by the International Cricket Council (ICC) that makes it binding on players and officials to immediately report any offer to throw a match as well as the person it is coming from.

The contract also forbids players from mixing with any bookmaker or person associated with gambling or betting.

The PCB has stressed that if any player is found guilty of liaisoning with a bookmaker or gambler, or of being involved in fixing a match, he would face immediate suspension and severe penalties, which could include criminal investigation.

It is learnt that the board is still working on the annual contract under which a pool of players signed on by the board would be paid monthly salaries and additional benefits during the off-season.

The new contract has also enhanced financial incentives for the players, the details of which are not available.
