CCI's invitation tourney from today

MUMBAI, OCT. 4. Pooja Galundia from Rajasthan, current national women's snooker champion, has confirmed her participation in the 2nd Cricket Club of India's ladies invitation snooker tournament, to be held in Mumbai from October 5 to 14. This tournament is a prelude to the National women's snooker to be held in Chennai in January 2001. Other notable cueists in the fray include Singapore-based Varsha Majmudar, who won the CCI event in 1999, Bangalore's Judith Walia and Mumbai's Heena Khandelwal.

The matches in this invitation snooker event, to be played at the Wilson Jones billiards room at the CCI, will be on a round-robin format with two groups of eight players each, four qualifiers from each group advancing to the quarterfinals. Matches upto this stage will be played on best-of-five-frames basis, while the semifinals and final will last seven frames. The total prize money is Rs. 40,500, with Rs. 15,000 for the winner, Rs. 7,500 for the runner-up, Rs. 3,500 for the semifinalists, Rs. 2,500 for the quarterfinalists and Rs. 1,000 for highest break (qualifying mark is 50). Mr. Shrikant Zaveri of Tribhuvandas Bhimji Zaveri Jewellers will be offering special gifts to all participants.

Groupings: Group A: Varsha Majmudar, Meenal Thakur, Judith Walia, Neeta Sanghvi, Chitra M, Ritu Shrivastava, Vidya Pillai, Kamala Babu; Group B: Pooja Galundia, Heena Khandelwal, Anuja Thakur, R. Umadevi, Renu Bharkatiya, Usha Khandelwal, Jagruti Patel, Sangeeta Hemchand.
