CM to inaugurate 'E-Governance' meet
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI, OCT. 4. A high-level meeting here tomorrow will review
the progress in the State Government's drive to computerise its
various departments and chart out schemes to usher in a
``paperless system'' in the State Administration.
With `E-Governance' becoming the buzz word, the Chief Minister,
Mr. M. Karunanidhi, who is to inaugurate the conference on this
theme, will have a direct feedback on the progress made in the
computerisation programmes from the District Collectors and other
top officials.
While the Government recently appointed well known educationist,
Prof. M. Anandakrishnan, as the Information Technology (IT)
Advisor to the Chief Minister, computerising routine
administrative tasks has been going on at various levels.
However, an integrated picture of the extent to which `E-
Governance' has been achieved in the State and the tasks ahead
are expected to emerge during tomorrow's deliberations.
The programme taken up so far include installation of computers
in 50 taluk offices which has enabled registration of land
documents electronically. Of the 385 Panchayat Unions (PU) in the
State, steps have already been taken to computerise operations in
51 taluks and another 52 taluks are being taken up this year,
covering Tirunelveli, Salem and Cuddalore districts.
All District Rural Development Agencies (DRDA) have been given
computers, to help prepare estimates and monitor the
implementation of development programmes.
Steps have also been taken to computerise operations in the five
Municipal corporations in the State including Chennai and in the
commercial taxes department.
