'Gopal hopeful of bringing back hostages'

BANGALORE, OCT. 4. The Karnataka Chief Minister, Mr. S. M. Krishna, is said to have spoken over phone to his Tamil Nadu counterpart, Mr. M. Karunanidhi, today, about the impasse in securing the release of Mr. Rajkumar.

Mr. Karunanidhi is said to have assured Mr. Krishna that the joint emissary of the two States, Mr. R. R. Gopal, was waiting for a message from Veerappan before entering the forest and meeting the brigand for the fifth time.

It may be recalled that during Mr. Gopal's last meeting with Veerappan, Mr. Nagappa, assistant film director, who was kidnapped along with Mr. Rajkumar, managed to escape.

According to Mr.Karunanidhi, Mr. Gopal was hopeful of breaking the deadlock. He had also told him that he would bring back all the hostages.
